TATA SAFARI

The Tata Safari is an SUV produced by Tata Motors of India. It is the first SUV to be designed, developed and manufactured entirely in India. The Safari is said to deliver almost the same power and torque as the Mitsubishi Pajero, but available at 60% of the Pajero's price (although this hasn't been thoroughly confirmed). It was released in 1998 with a 1.9-litre Turbo Diesel engine.

The Safari was extensively modified in August 2005, which included the addition of a new 3-litre DiCOR engine along with modified interiors and exteriors. This 3-litre engine is the first diesel engine from Tata Motors with common rail technology. A 2-litre petrol engine was also added to the range that same year. It was this modified version that won the Motor Forum's Car of the Year for 2007, in the SUV category. Voted by the users, it beat out rivals such as the Toyota RAV 4, Land Rover Freelander and Honda CRV.

Launched in 1998 in Turbo Diesel form, the Safari had 90 bhp (67 kW) power. It came with a synchromesh forward five-speed gearbox, with a 4X4 option. However, it was regarded to be grossly underpowered, with a heavy body rollover.

The new Tata Safari DiCOR (DiCOR standing for "Direct Injection Common Rail engine") is powered by a 3000 cc inline-four cylinder engine that develops 114 bhp (85 kW) at 3000 rpm and 30 kgf·m (300 N·m) of torque between 1600 and 2000 rpm. The engine is taken from the Tata 407, a truck manufactured by Tata Motors.

The new engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox, with a new, sporty gear lever. Tata recently displayed a EURO 4 compliant 2.2-litre DiCOR engine with 143 bhp (107 kW) at the 2006 Bologna Motor Show. A new Safari DiCOR 2.2L VTT (Variable Turbine Technology) with 140 bhp (100 kW) and 320 N·m (236 ft·lbf) of torque launched on October 5, 2007. It has some improved interior features like two-tone upholstery and leather seats. The high end version of the Safari comes with full safety features like airbags and ABS with EBD, and is priced at almost $20,000.

The main issue with the Safari is that it is quite a heavy vehicle; it tilts the scales at 2115 kg (4663 lb) (kerb); adding an extra 110 kg (243 lb) for the 4WD variant. The consequence of that is though the engine specifications sound great on paper - 30 kgf·m (290 N·m) of torque at 1600 rpm is decent by any standards - it is not a great leap in terms of outright performance. Nevertheless, with the DiCOR engine, the 4WD Safari is substantially quicker than the 2000 cc turbodiesel model.

The name is pronounced/ˈdʒægjuːɚ/ "jag-u-ar" (except for in North America where it is pronounced {dʒægwɑr}) with the term "Jag" being used colloquially.

Although many media reports stated that on 2008-03-26, Jaguar and Land-Rover became owned by the Indian company, Tata Motors, the Ford Motor Company and Tata Motors stated, in press releases on the same day, that the sale is not due for completion until the second quarter of 2008.

It is understood that Ford Motor Company Ltd. will not retain any shareholding in either the Jaguar or Land-Rover companies, unlike Aston Martin where on its sale a small shareholding was retained; the total sum to be paid in cash by Tata Motors is approximately US $ 2.3 billion, Ford will then contribute up to US $600 million to the Jaguar Land Rover pension plans.

Land Rover is an all-terrain vehicle and Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) manufacturer, based in Gaydon, England, UKSolihull, West Midlands and Halewood, Merseyside. Originally the term Land Rover referred to one specific vehicle, a pioneering civilian all-terrain utility vehicle launched on April 30, 1948, at the Amsterdam Motor Show, but was later used as a brand for several distinct models, all four-wheel drive. Starting out as part of The Rover Car Company or Rover, Land Rovers were designed and manufactured as a range of four-wheel drive vehicles under a succession of owners, including British Leyland, British Aerospace and BMW. In 2000, the marque was sold by BMW to the Ford Motor Company, becoming part of their Premier Automotive Group. Media reports stated that Jaguar and Land Rover became owned by the Indian company Tata Motors on March 26, 2008, this contradicted press releases by the Ford Motor Company and Tata Motors issued on the same day, stating that the sale was not due to be completed until the end of the second quarter of 2008. with two UK production plants at

NANO

DREAMS CAME TRUE

Nano is a car which has breathed into life due to one man.Credit to Mr. Ratan Tata for his determination to build a low cost family car that has come true, finally! Took long it did, but the Nano came in a beautiful form. Touted as world’s cheapest car by a far cry, Nano has been the talk of the town around the globe. Head honchos of big organizations have been pouring in by numbers to have a look at this engineering masterpiece.

Interiors:
As attractive as the Nano is on the outside, the same cannot be said for the interior. The plastics feel cheap and it is here that you begin to feel the concern towards the price that Tata was aiming at. The rudimentary knobs and switches point towards the use of materials which would be better off in tractors twenty years old! Dreary and uninspiring by any measure, that’s what one can say about the interior quality and looks. What impressed me though was the layout. Spacious and functional, the dashboard has a curved look which can prove beneficial when it comes to storing items. The speedo is calibrated to a top whack of 120kmph though we shall reserve our statements on that till we test the car thoroughly. Cash saving activity has gone a bit too far with the sun visor, there’s only one!The seats have integrated head restraints, like in the hugely popular, Hyundai i10. Yes the Nano will be deprived of a lot of creature comforts but to satisfy your salivating mouth, Tata will offer the top end version with air con, power windows and power steering. This car is destined to be exported too, so provision for ABS and airbags will also be there for sure. The floor mounted four-speed gearbox wasn’t smootH.Roominess is what this compact car from Tata is all about. Four average sized Indians will find themselves enjoying their ride.

ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS:
It is an all-aluminum two cylinder engine displacing 624cc with two valves per cylinder driven by a single overhead camshaft. The bore and stroke are nearly similar giving it a ‘square’ form. Making the Nano move will be the power of 33 horses which will peak out at 5500rpm while 48Nm of turning force will be supplied at a meager 2500rpm which should help the drivability of the car. The Nano will transmit its small amount of power via a 4-speed cable operated gearbox with the fourth being an overdriven ratio. Tata is working on developing an automatic gearbox as well but that will not be available when the car gets launched later this year. In addition to the 624cc petrol engine, the Indian auto giant might also bring out a common-rail diesel engine (700cc)
